Centro de Derechos Humanos (Human Rights Research Center)
The object of the internship is to integrate international students to the work carry on by the Research Center, in particular the intern will:
- Assist in the development of ongoing projects. Currently, the center has openings for internships on the following areas:
- Gender, focused on Violence against women. The researcher professors are Myrna Villegas and Lavinia Francesconi.
- Child Studies. The intern will assist professor Liliana Galdámez on her project "Anillos en Ciencias Sociales".
- Coordination organizing Diplomas at the Law School, regarding Human Rights.
- Scholars at Risk Project - Carry personal research about topics determined by the Human Rights Research Center. This item could involve writing an essay or a paper.
- Collaborate in the organization of Congresses, Seminars and other academic activities.
- Other activities agreed between the student and the research center depending on the needs of the Research Center.
Available Places
Two students per semester.
Duration of the internship
The internship will have a minimum duration of three months and a maximum duration of six months. It shall begin on March or August, depending of the semester when it will be performed.
Eligibility
In order to apply, the exchange student shall fulfill the following requirements:
- Must participate as an exchange student at University of Chile, during the semester when the internship takes place. The student must have registered at least two courses at the Faculty of Law.
- Must have an average grade of 5,0 or higher, according the grade equivalence with the student home university (please take into consideration that our grade scale goes from 1 to 7, being 5,0 the equivalent of 71,42% of the maximum grade).
- Must submit a letter of intent. The letter must be written in Spanish, and the student shall expose his or her reason to participate on the internship and how he or she thinks his or her participation will be meaningful for the Research Center and the Faculty of Law.
- Must prove a level B2 or higher of proficiency in English and Spanish.
The selection process will be performed in two stages. First, the International Affairs Office will verify the fulfillment of the requirements. Second, the Human Rights Research Center will call the students for an interview, which will be performed by the Research Center team.
The criteria of selection consider the fulfillment of the requisites; the student’s compatibility with the methodology and work principles of the research center; and, his or her abilities and experience on research. The Research Center will specially consider the student’s work or research expertise on topics related with the Center’s research areas.
The results will be communicated during the last week of January (for the internship that takes place on the first semester) and the last week of June (for the internship that takes place on second semester).
Characterization
The internship will not be remunerated. The internship shall have a workload of 8 hours per week. They will be distributed on the way agreed between the Human Rights Center and the intern.
By the end of the internship, the intern will be awarded a diploma as recognition of his or her participation. This will be issued and signed by the Director of the Human Rights Research Center and the Coordinator of the International Affairs Office.
Student obligations
The selected students commit themselves to attend and complete the internship activities. They specially commit themselves to attend on the days and hours agreed with the research center; sign the attendance book showing punctuality in the attendance to the activities; follow the requirements, instructions and protocols requested for the scheduled activities; justify eventual absences with due anticipation; deliver the results accorded with the academic unit in the timing agreed; and, take care of the infrastructure and implements belonging to the Research Center.
Termination
The internship may finish for the following reasons:
- The compliance of the duration term and the delivery of the agreed results.
- By the request of the Research Center or the exchange student, on exceptional cases.
- For the unjustified absence of the student at two or more scheduled activities.
- For showing the student a conduct incompatible with the scheduled activities or the Universidad de Chile “Students Regulation, University Decree” number 007586 of November 19th 1993, and/or the “Regulation of Students Disciplinary Jurisdiction, Exempt University Decree” number 8307, of December 14th 1993.
