Description
According to the interests of the student, the intern can:
- Collaborate in the research work carried out by the research center according to the following subjects:
- Duration and definition of responsibility
- Juvenile Criminal Law and Criminology
- Rationality of Proof and Justification of the Penalty - Assist in the organization of outreach activities. In particular, in the organization of the CEJ Seminars, which seek to strengthen the interdisciplinary legal debate on all issues related to the administration of justice. The seminars are attended by officials of the various government agencies as an excellent opportunity to meet and dialogue with operators of the penal system in Chile.
- Develop monographic works on issues related to the administration of justice.
Duration of the internship
The internship will have a minimum duration of three months. Nevertheless, the internship could be extended for justified reasons. It shall begin on March or August, depending of the semester when it will be performed.
Eligibility
In order to apply, the exchange student shall fulfill the following requirements:
- Must participate as an exchange student at University of Chile, during the semester when the internship takes place. The student must have registered at least two courses at the Faculty of Law.
- Must submit a letter of intent. The letter must be written in Spanish, and the student shall expose his or her reason to participate on the internship and how he or she thinks his or her participation will be meaningful for the Research Center and the Faculty of Law.
- Prociciency in English or German is desirable.
The selection process will be performed in two stages. First, the International Affairs Office will verify the fulfillment of the requirements. Second, the Justice Research Center may call the students for an interview.
The criteria of selection consider the fulfillment of the requisites, the student’s compatibility with the methodology and work principles of the research center, and his or her abilities and experience on research.
The results will be communicated during the last week of January (for the internship that takes place on the first semester) and the last week of June (for the internship that takes place on second semester).
Characterization
The internship will not be remunerated. The internship shall have a workload of minimum 5 hours per week. They will be distributed on the way agreed between the Justice Research Center and the intern.
By the end of the internship, the intern will be awarded a diploma as recognition of his or her participation. This will be issues and signed by the Director of the Justice Research Center and the Coordinator of the International Affairs Office.
Student obligations
The selected students commit themselves to attend and complete the internship activities. They specially commit themselves to attend on the days and hours agreed with the research center; show punctuality in the attendance to the activities; follow the requirements, instructions and protocols requested for the scheduled activities; justify eventual absences with due anticipation; and, deliver the results accorded with the academic unit in the timing agreed. At the beginning of the internship, the students must sign a Memorandum of Understanding that will consign all the previous obligations, among other determined to specific situations.
Termination
The internship may finish for the following reasons:
- The compliance of the duration term and the delivery of the agreed results.
- By the request of the Research Center or the exchange student, on exceptional cases.
- For the unjustified absence of the student at two or more scheduled activities.
- For showing the student a conduct incompatible with the scheduled activities or the Universidad de Chile “Students Regulation, University Decree” number 007586 of November 19th 1993, and/or the “Regulation of Students Disciplinary Jurisdiction, Exempt University Decree” number 8307, of December 14th 1993.
