Centro de Estudios en Derecho Informático (Informatics Law Research Center)
The Informatics Law Research Center has openings for two exchange students to participate on a research project about processing of personal data. In Chile, this subject is regulated by law number 19.268, which is currently being under great and deep discussion on the academic, social, entrepreneur and parliamentary fields.
Interns are expected to work on a comparison between Chilean and their local legislation concerning data protection. Their work shall involve different sources of law such as doctrine, legislation and case law, and analysis of both form and substance.
In general, the interns will:
- Assist in the development of ongoing projects.
- Carry personal research about topics determined by the Informatics Law Research Center. This item will involve writing an essay or a paper.
- Collaborate in the organization of Congresses, Seminars and other academic activities.
Available places
Two students per semester.
Duration of the internship
The internship will have a minimum duration of three months. It will begin on March or August, depending of the semester when it will be performed.
Eligibility
In order to apply, the exchange student shall fulfill the following requirements:
- - Participate as an exchange student at University of Chile, during the semester when the internship takes place. The student must have registered at least two courses at the Faculty of Law.
- - Certify a good academic background
- - Submit a covering letter. The letter must be written in Spanish, and the student shall expose his or her reason to participate on the internship and how he or she thinks his or her participation will be meaningful for the Research Center and the Faculty of Law.
- - Prove a level B2 or higher of proficiency in English or Spanish.
The selection process will be performed in two stages. First, the International Affairs Office will verify the fulfillment of the requirements. Second, the Informatics Law Research Center will call the students for an interview.
The criteria of selection will consider the fulfillment of the requisites, the interview, the students compatibility with the methodology and work principles of the research center, his or her abilities and experience on the research field.
The results will be communicated during the first weeks of March (for the internship taking place on the first semester) and the first weeks of August (for the internship taking place on second semester).
Characterization
The internship will not be remunerated. The internship shall have a workload between four to eight hours per week, distributed on the way agreed between Informatics Law Research Center and the intern. However, the time schedule will necessarily involve a work session with Professor Alex Pesso and other to be determined, every Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
By the end of the internship, the intern will be awarded a diploma as recognition of his or her participation.
Student obligations
The selected students commit themselves to attend and complete the internship activities. They specially commit themselves to attend on the days and hours agreed with the research center; show punctuality in the attendance to the activities; follow the requirements, instructions and protocols requested for the scheduled activities; justify eventual absences with due anticipation; and, deliver the results accorded with the academic unit in the timing agreed, among others agreed between the student and the Research Center.
Termination
The internship may finish for the following reasons:
- The compliance of the duration term and the delivery of the agreed results.
- By the request of the Research Center or the exchange student, on exceptional cases.
- For the unjustified absence of the student at two or more scheduled activities.
- For showing the student a conduct incompatible with the scheduled activities or the Universidad de Chile “Students Regulation, University Decree” number 007586 of November 19th 1993, and/or the “Regulation of Students Disciplinary Jurisdiction, Exempt University Decree” number 8307, of December 14th 1993.
